Mayor Rahm Emanuel Set To Raise Age Requirement For Purchasing Tobacco Products

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel could be raising the age requirements for purchasing tobacco products.

According to the Chicago Tribune, last Wednesday Emanuel proposed a plan to raise the age for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21. This news comes after the mayor proposed a plan to raise taxes on cigars, smokeless tobacco products and papers used for tobacco.

Hawaii and other cities including New York and Cleveland have already changed theirr age minimum for buying tobacco products to age 21.

The reason for the change in age requirements is because most tobacco smokers begin smoking before the age of 21.

What do you think of this proposal? Will this reduce the number of cigarette smokers? Do you think it will prevent those under 21 from smoking?
